Donor Spotlight: John H. and Mary M. Lee

The John H. and Mary H. Lee Memorial Scholarship honors two visionary pioneers whose lifelong commitment to Ephrata left an enduring mark on the town’s cultural and economic landscape. As business owners, civic leaders, and devoted family members, John and Mary Lee helped shape the heart of Ephrata—both literally and figuratively—through their work in the movie theater industry and their unwavering support of the community.

Their journey began in the 1930s, during the early development of the Columbia Basin Project. After meeting in Mason City, where Mary’s father worked on surveying the Grand Coulee Dam, John and Mary settled in Ephrata, then a town of only 700 people. What began with a single theater soon grew into Columbia Basin Theaters—a regional network of 15 theaters and drive-ins serving communities across central Washington. From selling tickets and running projectors to promoting films in a traveling van as part of the “Sagebrush Circuit,” John and Mary did it all, bringing entertainment and joy to generations of families.

In 1952, the couple opened the Lee Theatre in Ephrata, whose venue opening drew the entire school district and became a place for entertainment for the community. From classic matinees to landmark film events, the Lees helped create memories for decades. Mary’s devotion extended beyond business: she was a skilled pianist, organist at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for 40 years, and an engaged mother of three, all while playing an integral role in the family business.

The scholarship, established in their name, is a tribute to this remarkable legacy and aims to support graduating seniors from Ephrata High School who demonstrate a commitment to citizenship and maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. It reflects the Lees’ values, hard work, dedication, and the importance of giving back to one’s community. Just as the Lee Theatre stood as a gathering place and symbol of opportunity, the scholarship continues their spirit of generosity by helping young people pursue their goals.

More than a memorial, this scholarship is a continuation of John and Mary’s vision: a thriving, connected community where the next generation is supported and inspired.
